FSSAI stands for Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. Obtaining an FSSAI registration or licence is mandatory before starting any food business operation in India. Every individual or Food Business Operator (FBO) involved in manufacturing, transportation, storage, distribution, or sale of food products must obtain a 14-digit FSSAI number.
This number is printed on all food packages and serves as proof that the food product meets the safety and quality standards prescribed by the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. It builds consumer trust, reduces food adulteration, and gives your business legal protection.
FSSAI registrations and licences are issued through the online Food Licensing and Registration System (FLRS) portal. TaxFillingIndia handles the entire application process for you — from document preparation to submission and follow-up.
Your FSSAI licence type is determined by your annual turnover and area of operation. Choose correctly to avoid penalties.
For small food businesses with annual turnover not exceeding ₹12 lakh. The simplest form of FSSAI authorisation. Issued by the local district authority.
For medium-sized food businesses operating within a single state with annual turnover between ₹12 lakh and ₹20 crore. Issued by the State Food Safety Commissioner.
For large food businesses with turnover exceeding ₹20 crore, or those operating across multiple states, or engaged in import/export of food products. Issued by the Central Government.
If your business involves food in any form — manufacturing, trading, storing, serving, or transporting — FSSAI registration is mandatory by law.
Beyond legal compliance, an FSSAI licence actively builds your brand and business credibility.

Everything you need to know about FSSAI food licence registration in Hyderabad and across India.
FSSAI stands for Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. It is a statutory body established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Obtaining an FSSAI registration or licence is mandatory for every Food Business Operator (FBO) — whether you manufacture, process, store, distribute, transport, or sell food products. Operating without a valid FSSAI licence is a legal offence and can attract penalties of up to ₹5 lakh.
FSSAI Registration is the Basic category — for petty food businesses (hawkers, small vendors, home bakers) with annual turnover up to ₹12 lakh. It is issued by the local district authority. FSSAI Licence is of two types: State Licence (for businesses with turnover between ₹12 lakh and ₹20 crore, operating within one state) and Central Licence (for businesses above ₹20 crore turnover or operating across multiple states or involved in food import/export).
An FSSAI licence or registration is issued with a validity of 1 to 5 years, at the choice of the applicant. Choosing a longer validity period reduces the frequency of renewal. The renewal application must be submitted at least 30 days before the licence expiry date. Failure to renew on time attracts a penalty of ₹100 per day until renewal is completed. If the lapse continues, the old licence is deactivated and a fresh licence must be applied for.
Operating without a valid FSSAI licence can result in a fine of up to ₹5 lakh under the Food Safety and Standards Act. Additionally, non-renewal of licences attracts a penalty of ₹100 per day until renewal is done. The food safety officer can also order closure of the business premises. For serious violations like selling adulterated food, penalties can extend to imprisonment.
TaxFillingIndia initiates the application filing on the same day documents are received. Once filed, Basic Registration is typically granted within 7–10 working days. State Licence processing takes 30–45 working days. Central Licence processing can take up to 60 working days, as it involves inspection by the concerned food safety authority. TaxFillingIndia tracks the application status and follows up with authorities throughout the process.
Yes. In the event of the death of the licence holder, the FSSAI licence can be transferred to a legal heir or family member of the deceased. The recipient must apply to the concerned food authority for transfer of the licence in their favour along with supporting legal documents (death certificate, legal heir certificate, etc.). TaxFillingIndia assists with the complete FSSAI transfer process.
